The challenge

One app for products that each had their own.

Before this app, every connected LG product had its own control app, its own back-end server, and its own visual identity. For a customer with several LG devices, that meant a cluttered phone and an inconsistent experience.

The challenge was to create a single, visually unified app that could combine and control all products — the foundation for LG's connected-home experience.

My role

Leading UX for the connected home.

As Project Leader on the Smart Home UX team, I developed the UX scenarios for the total-product-control app that launched at CES 2014. The work went beyond a single app:

1

Unified control app

UX scenarios for controlling fridges, washers, vacuums and TVs from one consistent interface.

2

Robotics & big data

UX scenes for LG's robotic vacuum (applied in the 2013 model) and directions for using appliance log (big) data.

3

Next home robot

UX scenes and a working UX prototype for LG's next home robot.

The product

A single, unified connected-home experience.

By unifying control, identity, and interaction into one app, LG could offer a coherent smart-home experience instead of a scattered set of single-product tools.
